Jūji uke is suitable for the Jōdan and the Gedan area. It can be performed with either closed or open hands (kaishu). This X-shaped defensive technique was designed as a way to lock the attacking arm or leg. In the open hands version, after the block, the attacking forearm is held and rotated to restrict the opponent's movements or force him into an awkward position. Jūji uke occurs in both basic and advanced kata. In basic kata, the technique is seen in heian yondan and godan. In Heian godan it occurs in both versions: with closed or open hands.
